What Athan does well
Athan sits on IslamicFinder's prayer-time database, which has been maintained for a long time and covers an enormous number of locations. Its adhan notifications are dependable, and it supports the calculation methods you are likely to need wherever you live.
If your only requirement is knowing when to pray and hearing the adhan, Athan already solves that. Nothing below is an argument that it doesn't.
Where people run into its limits
Two things send people looking. The first is ads in the free tier, which land badly in an app tied to worship. The second is that the Quran inside Athan is an addition rather than the centre — fine for looking a verse up, thin if you want to read daily with translation and tafsir.
There is also nothing here to help you build consistency. Athan tells you the time; it doesn't help you on the week you keep missing Fajr.
Choosing between the alternatives
If your mosque publishes its own timetable and you pray there, MAWAQIT is hard to beat: it is free, ad-free, and shows the actual jamaah times rather than a calculation that may be ten minutes off.
If you want one app for both halves — prayer reminders and a Quran you will actually read — Tariq covers prayer times, Qibla, duas and hadith alongside a verse feed with translation, transliteration and tafsir, with no ads in any tier and a streak to keep you going.
