What is the sunnah?
The sunnah is the way of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — his sayings, actions and approvals, preserved in hadith. Alongside the Quran, it is a primary source of guidance that shows how the teachings of Islam are lived in practice.
Following the sunnah is not about imitation for its own sake; it is about aligning your character, worship and everyday choices with a proven prophetic example.
Why the prophetic way matters
The Prophet was described by his wife Aisha as 'a walking Quran' — a living demonstration of its values. His example makes abstract ideals concrete: how to treat neighbours, how to speak, how to eat, how to handle anger and how to worship.
For anyone building a spiritual routine, the sunnah provides tested, balanced habits rather than extremes.
لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ
“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example.”
Simple sunnah habits to start with
Begin small: say Bismillah before eating, greet others with salam, smile (which the Prophet called a charity), sleep and wake with the prescribed supplications, and use the miswak or brush the teeth.
Add gratitude and gentleness. Many prophetic teachings emphasise kindness, patience and moderation — habits that reshape character over time.
Learn a little, act on it
The best way to live the sunnah is to learn one authentic teaching and practise it until it becomes natural, then add the next. Tariq shares prophetic teachings and daily actions so you can turn knowledge into consistent practice.
